Born with Cerebral Palsy, actor RJ Mitte has a deep appreciation for Shriner’s Children Hospital and an important message to share with children with Cerebral Palsy.
RJ Mitte, who is best known for his role as Walter Jr. in Breaking Bad, visits Shriners Hospitals for Children every once in a while to say hello to the staff who treated him and to hang out and inspire children who also have Cerebral Palsy and other disabilities.
At the age of 3, RJ was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. He was referred to the Shriners Hospital for Children in Shreveport, LA after he was noticed walking on his toes. RJ was treated by the medical experts and physical therapy specialists at Shriners for most of his childhood.
“They put me in occupational therapy, speech therapy,” said RJ. “Really, I owe Shriners so much. I wouldn’t be able to do what I do today if they weren’t there.”
To show his appreciation, RJ is paying it forward. The actor is actively involved in Shriners’ Walk For Love™, which takes place in various cities across the country. The family-fun, festival-like event brings together people who want to help kids at Shriners.
RJ says Walk For Love is a place to show everyone that we all have the same goal: “a stable future for our children and especially for children with disabilities.”
“There are so many times people will say ‘You can’t do this,’ ‘You will never have a normal life,’ and that is a lie,” said RJ. What truly matters, he says, “is not letting people define you.”
